I wanted to share with you my experience of emotional freedom therapy. For many years I had considered having counselling for trauma, but had never been brave enough to access this. I didn't want to re-live the events and was worried that if I let it all out, then I may not cope with it. Mostly I had just got on with my life, occasionally I would replay events in my mind and feel sad and upset, but would then put it back in the box until the next time. During my hypnotherapy training we were learning about emotional freedom therapy and a volunteer was needed. I don't know why, but I instantly volunteered, I think it was just the right time for me to seek some help. Emotional freedom therapy works by tapping the meridian points while the therapist guides you where to tap and will make suggestions of what to say while tapping. What was great about this was that I didn't need to talk about the actual trauma, but could talk in metaphors. For example, what did the trauma feel like, if it was a wound, what would it be, if it was a colour what would it be. Where was the tension felt in my body. At the start, just thinking about the trauma, my anxiety was through the roof and beyond, but after each round of tapping, it reduced. It reduced from a 10 out 10 to around a 1. Following the EFT I have a new perspective on what happened to me and can even talk about it, without becoming emotional and distressed. In many ways it has changed my life. Not only because I have managed to process events that were traumatic to me, but it has also given me a skill that I can use with others. I have used EFT on clients if they have arrived for their appointment in a stressed or emotional state. This allows the person to engage with the therapy in a calm and contained state.
